Toys for Tots 2002 Report
January 14, 2003
The Triangle Woodworkers Association provided more than 1600 hand made toys for
the Marines' Toys for Tots drive. This year we did not have a workshop at Home
Depot. However, thanks to Fred Ford's efforts we had a very successful one at
Hal's shop. The workshop produced 300 completed cars. Using the leftover parts,
45 more were complete before the turn in time. There are pats for many hundred
more.
I would suggest at least two similar workshops in 2003.
-
A group made up of Fred Ford, Noel Butzke, Jimmy Burnes and Dick Courtney produced 700 Volkswagen cars.
-
Dick Courtney provided 77 trucks.
-
Dick Hall provided 250 cars.
-
Charlie Davis provided 80 cedar cars.
-
Mile Resar provided 6 each of ducks, chickens and elephants.
-
John Todd provided two shoe string climbers.
-
Hal Liberty provided 139 airplanes that were made by many people.
The special workshop ( 26 members and families) resulted in 345 cars.
We did have one article published by the Wake Weekly that covered our activity.
I did receive one complaint about not having any workshops in the Cary area.
In addition to the TWA members, we had one Montessori school from Raleigh, a boarding school from Pittsboro help make airplanes. A youth group from a Wake Forest church was also going to help but they were unable to come because of the ice storm. I already have some volunteers from Wake forest who plan to help in 2003. The Wake Weekly will help us if needed. It is important that we have TWA members help with the schools and church groups. We can use these workshops as a way of getting our youth interested in woodworking.
I would like to thank all the members who helped in workshops and/or provided toys.
