Appalachian Vs UNC
In UNC's opening game against Appalachian State the Tar Heels took control in the first period. Getting goals by Ben Owens and Andy Pavlina in the 1st period. After UNC failing to connect on a 5 on 3 opportunity, Appalachian State took control of the 2nd period and took the lead 4-2. UNC came out strong in the 3rd period to regain their momentum. Kellet Atkinson came up big netting 2 goals with the tying goal coming with 3:05 left in regualtion. In the 5 minute overtime period both teams had their chances until Ryan Krog took a pass from Andy pavlina and Peter Floyd and buried it in the back of the net with 2:09 left in OT to win the game for the Tar Heels. Mathieu Poirier was the winning goalie.
UNC-Charlotte Vs UNC
The Tar Heels came out flat in this game and let the 49'ers dicate the pace of the game. The Tar Heels were outplayed in all aspects during the first period: Score 0-1 and Shots 6-9. This period woke up the sleepy Tar Heels. The 49'ers came out fast in the second period and took a 2-0 lead. Then the Tar Heels started to take over the control of the game. While short-handed late in the period, Andy Pavlina got a break-away then fed Reuben Kamp on a text book drop pass and Reuben buried the puck into the twine. Tar Heels outshot the 49'ers 15-5 in this period. The 49'ers got their 2 goal lead back in the beginning of the third period. Once again the Tar Heels got a short-handed goal. This time it was an unassisted goal by Peter Floyd. At this point there was no looking back and 49'ers were systematically worn down. The game tying goal was a power play goal by Ryan Krog from Andy Pavlina. Then on another power play on a feed from Peter Pavlina and Ray Brancato, Ryan Krog buried the puck to get his league leading second game winning goal in as many game. The Heels got an insurance goal when Peter Floyd took a feed from Ryan Krog and buried a back-hander. The 49'ers were outshot in the final period 17-11. Tim Brunt was the winning goalie in this game.
UNC Vs Duke
Duke took advantage of 3 first period power play goals and it was all down hill from there. Duke controlled most of this games action in UNC's end of the ice and beat the Tar Heels 8-0. The Blue Devils outshot the Heels 47-14. This was UNC's first league game and loss for the season. Tim Brunt suffered this loss in net.
UNC Vs Virgina Tech
UNC hopped on the bus for a ride to the Roanoke Civic Center with only 13 skaters and 1 goalie to play this game due to school work loads prior to Fall Break and injuries. This game started off pretty evenly. VA Tech took a 2-0 lead and UNC fought back with a nice goal from Peter Pavlina in front of the net from a feed from Reuben Kamp and Kevin McMullin. Late in the first period the Hokies took a penalty. On this power play the Tar Heels lost Ray Brancato to a bad bruise on his leg when he took a knee to it. This even made the UNC bench shorter. The Heels came out strong in the second period and Ryan Krog tied the game on a power play that was carried over from the first period. Ryan took a pass from Peter Floyd and Jeremy Weaver to bury the puck behind the Hookie goalie. Unfortunately for the Heels this is were the depth of the Hookie bench took over and controlled the remainder of the game. VA Tech won 8-2 and was outshot 42-26. Mathieu Poirier suffered the loss in net for UNC.
