Gray wolf, Canis lupus. The sportsman's ethic ran strong through the public life and
museum exhibits in the early twentieth century. H. H. Brimley, an outdoorsman himself,
evoked the fauna of the state's bygone wilderness by displaying mounts of large mammals
that had been hunted to extinction in North Carolinaelk, buffalo, wolf, mountain lion.
