Narceus americanus, the largest millipede in North Carolina, occurs throughout the state.
Adults may grow to four inches long. The success of millipedes as a group is undisputed; the
oldest living group of land arthropods, they have survived for 420 million years. Taxonomists
have classified 8,000 or so millipede species in 15 orders, and suspect that only about one-tenth
of the world's millipedes are known to science. Courtesy of Mike
