welcome to News Bytes, an online newsletter featuring the books and authors of the University of North Carolina Press. February is Black History Month. Learn more about our distinguished tradition of publishing books on African-American history and culture, and look at some of our featured titles . . . . February is also the month of romance, but if you choose not to celebrate Valentine's Day, find out what John Egerton wrote about the Loveless in his book Southern Food: At Home, on the Road, In History.
As March quickly approaches and signs of spring begin to appear, tourism
picks up, particularly in the mountains, where millions of tourists head
each year. A new book by Journalism professor and author Steve Nash takes
a timely look at the current ecological state of the Blue Ridge Mountains
and offers some insight on how we can help preserve the future of these
public lands. Many of the subjects he covers - explosive growth of
suburban-style communities and the invasion of exotic pests and plants -
have recently been in the news. Blue Ridge 2020: An Owner's Manual
by Steve Nash will be in stores in March, just in time for Earth Day
(April 22). This month's newsbytes will offer you a preview of this exciting new book and a profile of the author.
Finally, learn more about an important woman in North Carolina's history
(and don't forget: March is Women's History Month!). Jerry Cotten's Light and Air tells the story of Bayard
Wootten, the first
professional female photographer in North Carolina, and features many beautiful photographs of rural North Carolina.
