As signs of spring begin to appear, the travel bug bites, and millions of
tourists make plans to head
to the mountains each year. A new book by Journalism professor and author
Steve Nash takes
a timely look at the current ecological state of the Blue Ridge Mountains
and offers some insight on how we can help preserve the future of these
public lands. Many of the subjects he covers - explosive growth of
suburban-style communities and the invasion of exotic pests and plants -
have recently been in the news. Blue Ridge 2020: An Owner's
Manual
by Steve Nash will be in stores in March, in plenty of time for Earth Day
(April 22). This month's newsbytes features this eye-opening new book and includes a profile of the author.
"There aren't many certainties in life," outdoorsman Jim Dean writes,
"but I think I can come close with one prediction. . . . I've got a
pretty good idea where I'll be the first Saturday of each April for
the rest of my life. In case you haven't already figured it out,
that's the traditional opening day of the trout season in North
Carolina." This elegy to the trout season is from "Just Once a Year,"
the first of fifty essays in Jim Dean's Dogs
That Point, Fish That Bite, a
wonderfully readable collection of Dean's best writings on fishing and
hunting. This issue of News Bytes features the full text of Dean's
essay "Just Once a Year."
