How to Access and Use Information Contained in Files Outside of the Report Software

While the authors of the report have invested a great deal of time in the software to make it as easy to use and as powerful as possible, there is no way that we can anticipate all of the ways that archaeologists and researchers might want to use the information contained in Excavating Occaneechi Town. The solution that we have chosen is to provide all of the raw data from this report in easy-to-use, widely accepted formats on the CD-ROM.

The use of any of this information will require separate, third-party software. The types of software that you might need include a word processor, spreadsheet, database manager, image viewer, and computer-aided design (CAD) program. Accessing this information will also require some knowledge of how to use the software and how to access files from the CD-ROM.

Here are just a few of the reasons why you might want to access these separate data files:

  • Print out the maps at a different resolution.
  • Print out the data from the Detailed Artifact databases.
  • Do sophisticated queries or analyses of the artifact data.
  • Do additional analyses on the data in any of the tables.
  • Use the images in another publication (see our Fair Use Policy).
  • Format the text differently for presentation (see our Fair Use Policy).

Below is a brief description of some of the file types that we have made available. For more detailed information on specific filenames and directories for finding these files, along with a brief description of each file, see README.WRI located in the root directory of the CD-ROM and FILES.TXT, also located in the root directory of the CD-ROM.

  • Text Files
We have provided duplicates of all the text found in this report in text files located on the CD-ROM. These files are provided in three formats: (1) simple ASCII text format without any formatting marks; (2) Write format, which includes formatting; and (3) Microsoft Word, versions 6.0 and 7.0.

  • Tables
All of the data located in tables in this report has been duplicated in text files on the CD-ROM.

  • Artifact Data
All of the artifact data are located in dBase III and Paradox format files on the CD-ROM.

  • Graphics
All of the images viewed in this report can be found on the CD-ROM in simple bitmap format.

  • Maps
We have provided additional AutoCAD Exchange format files for all of the maps and feature drawings found in this report. These files can be used to print out the maps at higher resolution than we provide in the bitmap files.
