ChaptersA Guide to Using
the Text Chapters of Excavating Occaneechi Town
Most of the chapters of this report are simply electronic versions of
texts found in similar paper reports. All of the texts in this report
are divided into three levels of organization: chapters, articles, and
pages.
Chapters can be accessed directly by clicking on one of
the buttons in the Main Menu. Once you have navigated to a chapter that contains text, you
will see several tabs across the top of the screen. Each of these tabs
represents an article in that chapter. You can select an article by
clicking on its tab with the left mouse button.
Below the tabs
and at the left side of the screen are the formal title and author of
the article. Below the title and author is a list of the pages
associated with that article. These pages differ from normal pages in
a book in that they vary in length. They are analogous to sections
within an article. You can move between the electronic pages by
clicking on the page names in the list. If there is no list of pages,
then the article contains only one page.
The title of the
selected page also appears in italics above the text window at the right
of the screen. For pages that do not fit fully within the text window,
a scrollbar will appear to the right of the text. You can scroll
through the text one line at a time by using the mouse to click on the
arrows at the top and the bottom of the scrollbar, or you can scroll
through an entire screen (about 20 lines) at a time using the Page Up
and Page Down buttons on your keyboard (see keyboard shortcuts). Below
the text window is a unique page number to help you identify pages for
later reference (and for scholarly citation).
Some words in the
text are colored blue. These are hotwords, and
they indicate a link to another part of the report. When you move the
mouse cursor over a hotword the cursor will change into a pointing hand
and a box will appear that identifies the type of hotlink (i.e., page,
graphics, bibliography, or table). In order to follow the link, click
the left mouse button when the cursor is shaped like a pointing hand.
The link will take you to one of the following:
There are also several keyboard shortcuts that you can
use when reading a text chapter. For more, see Keyboard Shortcuts.
