Instructions on Viewing Different Excavation Contexts

Each excavated context has two or three different screen views associated with it, depending upon the context type. On the right side of each of these screens is a set of buttons which allows you to navigate between screen views. Following is a list of the different screen views that may be available to you. For information on navigating to a specific context, see Finding an Excavation Context.

Master Screen

When you navigate to a specific excavation context, the first screen of information to appear is the Master Screen. This screen presents a top-level view of all the information about that context. On the top right of the screen are the name, type, and dimensions of the context. Also in the upper right corner of the screen is a map of the site showing the location of the excavation context.

On the left side of the screen is a graphics window. The first image that you will see is a map of the context after excavation. Below the graphics window is the caption.

There are typically two to six images (i.e., maps or photographs) associated with each context. To move between the images, click on the large right arrow to the right of the image under the heading Graphics. This will call up the next image in the series. If you continue to click on the right arrow you will move though the entire series of images. The left arrow will move backwards through the images.

You also can activate a slide show which automatically displays all associated images in sequence. To do this, simply click on the small right arrow just below the large graphics arrows. To interrupt the slide show, click on the button with the black box just to the left of the small right arrow.

Many of the images have hotlinks that are defined on the image itself. Some of these links occur on maps and allow you to link to other illustrated contexts or artifacts; other links occur on excavation photographs and let you view more detailed images of artifacts visible in the photograph. When you move your mouse over a hotlink on an image, the cursor will change to a magnifying glass and a description of the hotlink will appear in the Zoom To field. When the mouse cursor is a magnifying glass you can click to navigate to that link. See Using Graphics for more information.

Many excavated contexts are directly associated with other contexts. A list of the associated contexts appears in the Link To field. You can double click on any context name in the list to link to that context. See Finding an Excavation Context for more information on using the Map.

Artifacts Screen

This screen provides detailed information about the artifacts that were recovered from a given excavated square, feature, or structure. At the top of the screen is a field which lists the excavated contexts within that square, feature, or structure, and the number of artifacts associated with it. A red check mark to the right of an entry indicates that one or more of the artifacts from that context have associated photographs.

You can click on any one of the contexts to view a list of all artifacts found in that context. This list will appear in the lower part of the screen and includes artifact type, size, count, and catalog number. A red check mark to the right of an entry indicates that it was photographed. Such an entry is also colored blue, indicating that it is hotlinked to the photograph. Simply click on the blue text to view the photograph. See Using Graphics for more information.

If the entry has a red arrow to the right of it, then you can click on the arrow to view more detailed information about that artifact (or artifacts). See Artifact Databases for more information.

Description Screen

This screen provides a detailed, written description of the excavated context. See Using the Text Chapters for more information on navigating within this screen.
