ONLINE HELP from the CD-ROM / Text Searching

Using the Text-Searching Capabilities of Excavating Occaneechi Town

This feature can be an important tool for finding information quickly. The full-text search will only look for text in the text-based chapters of the report. It does not search for text in tables or in the artifact databases. It also does not search for common words or for numbers in the text.

Getting to Text Search

The text-search function is accessed by selecting Search | Text Search from the menu at the top of the page. This invokes a dialog box which lets you initiate a word search. See Using the Menus for more help.

Using the Search Tool

The search dialog box allows you to specify text to search for. You can limit the search to a single chapter or expand it to search all chapters. After you have specified the text to search for, press the Query button. A list of all the matching pages will appear in the Query Results Window. You can go directly to any of these pages by either double-clicking on a line or highlighting a line and hitting the Go To button.

About Page Marks

Whenever you navigate to a page using the search tool, all occurrences of the searched text on that page will be highlighted in red, and the text will be scrolled so you can see the first instance of the searched text. The red marks will remain there indefinitely until one of two things happens: The marks can be cleared at any time by pressing the Clear All Marks Now button on the Search page; they are also cleared every time you go to a new page from the Search tool if the Clear Old Marks Automatically button is checked.

Advanced Searches

Excavating Occaneechi Town includes some sophisticated search tools which allow you to find complicated series of words on any given page. These tools include and, or, and not operators, as well as proximity searches and wildcards.

  • And Operator
Use "+" between words to search for both words on a page.

  • Or Operator
Use "," between words to search for either set of words on a page.

  • Not Operator
Use "-" between words to search for pages without certain words.

  • Proximity Searches
This tool searches for words or character strings that occur within a specified proximity of one another. Proximity is specified by placing "/x/" between two words, where x is a number. You can use "/x,y/" to search for words within x to y words of each other. For example, specifying "chipped /2,4/ artifact" searches for all places where "chipped" occurs within two to four words of "artifact." Specifying "chipped /-5,5/ artifact" searches for all places where "chipped" occurs within five words before or after "artifact."

  • Wildcards
Use "*" at the end of a word to specify an indeterminate end. For example, typing "hea*" will find hearth, heat, and heap.

  • Compound Searches
Searches can be compounded with the use of parentheses. For example, specifying "bone + pottery" lists all pages that have the words "bone" and "pottery" on them, specifying "hearth - charcoal" lists all pages that have the word "hearth" but not the word "charcoal," and specifying "(hearth - charcoal), (bone + pottery)" lists all pages that have "hearth" and not "charcoal" as well as all pages that have "bone" and "pottery."
