ONLINE HELP from the CD-ROM / Artifact Databases

Using the Detailed Artifact Database Section

Separate data files exist for pottery, pipes, lithic artifacts, beads, historic ceramics, historic artifacts, and faunal remains. These files provide very specific information about many of the artifacts found at Occaneechi Town and can be accessed by choosing Go To | Artifact Databases at the top of the screen and selecting a specific artifact category. These data files also can be accessed by viewing the artifact inventory for an excavated context (under Excavations) and selecting the More option for a specific artifact entry. See Using the Menus or Browsing the Excavations for more information.

Browsing the Artifact Databases

The artifact database files are divided into "pages" of about 88 lines each for viewing. When viewing artifact data, use the scroll bars to browse through a single page. Use the Page Up, Page Down, Top Page, and Last Page buttons to move between pages.

Sorting the Artifact Databases

It is possible to sort an entire artifact database by any one field. Simply click on the small Sort option under any one of the fields. You may only sort by a single field, and the secondary sort will then be by catalog number.

Filtering Records in an Artifact Database

It is possible to only look at artifacts that fit a certain criteria (based on the selection of specific attribute values). For fields with fewer than 100 different values, you can click on the drop-down list of values below each field name. You can choose criteria for more than one field. It is not possible to sort by any other field than Catalog Number when you have a Filter criteria selected. Selecting an asterisk "*" is equivalent to selecting all values in a particular field.

Printing Artifact Databases

It is not possible to print artifact data files directly from within Excavating Occaneechi Town. However, the data are accessible on the CD-ROM. See Using External Files for more information.
