Christopher Dunn, author of Brutality
Garden, first became interested in
Tropicália in 1985, after hearing Tropicália, ou Panis et
Circenis, which he describes as "a strange 'concept album'" that
seemed "ambiguous and utterly confusing." In 1992, Christopher Dunn
interviewed Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Tom Zé for a National
Public Radio program dedicated to the twenty-fifth anniversary of Tropicália
on Afropop Worldwide. At the time, Dunn was a graduate
student at Brown University, pursuing a degree in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies.
Christopher Dunn holds a joint appointment in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the African and African Diaspora Studies Program at Tulane University. An affiliate of the Roger Thayer Stone Center for Latin American Studies and codirector of the Brazilian Studies Council at Tulane, he is coeditor of Brazilian Popular Music and Globalization.
