graduate certificate | requirements | graduate courses | advising

Students are expected to achieve fluency in several critical, cultural theories in relation to a variety of research problems, a reflexive attitude toward theory and methodology that reflect current and historical issues in Cultural Studies, and an ability to conduct interdisciplinary research: to engage perspectives and empirical studies from diverse disciplines rigorously and productively.

The requirements for certification in cultural studies are as follows:

  • Declare intent to complete a graduate certificate in cultural studies by downloading and completeing the Declaration Form.  Completed and signed forms should be returned to:
    University Program in Cultural Studies
Institute for the Arts and Humanities
    CB# 3322 Hyde Hall
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
    Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3285
  • Complete required courses including: One (1) graduate core course in Cultural Studies selected from options designated annually by the UPCS; two (2) theory classes, at least one of which must be outside the student’s discipline; and two (2) interdisciplinary empirically defined/focused classes, at least one of which is outside the student’s discipline.
  • Participate for at least two (2) semesters in interdisciplinary reading/working group(s). These groups can be sponsored by any department, UPCS, IAH, etc., but they must involve students from multiple departments and be approved by the student’s UPCS advisor.
  • Submit a course plan and written statement. A course plan should be developed in consultation with a faculty advisor from the student's home department and a UPCS graduate advisor. Course plans must demonstrate thematic integrity and coherence. The UPCS Graduate Studies Committee will review all course plans and determine satisfactory completion of certificate requirements.  In no more than one page, students should explain why the particular classes taken make sense as “cultural studies” in light of the student’s own research interests. The statement should demonstrate a serious engagement with UPCS’ understanding of cultural studies.
  • Following Graduate School policy, a faculty member representing the certificate concentration must be a member of the student’s M.A. thesis or doctoral qualifying exams committee.
