Part 3 - Alternatives to manually creating a site inventory

(but they don't work that well for me).

1 - Use an online site mapping service:

There are many free online site mapping services. Search google for sitemap, generator, online. These are intended to create 'site maps' for search engines. This is not the same sort of site map that we need. For this example, I used Online SiteMap Creator Version. You plug in the address and hit submit url. You then get back a partial list of pages with titles and url's. You can highlight this and paste it into excel. Unfortunately, these are not separated by level, so there is a lot of sorting to do. You will probably have to load each page to understand the page relationships. Using this site map creator actually made it more work.

2- Use Visio to automatically create the site map for you.

The good news is that Visio will get every file down to the specified level. That is also the bad news. It will get every file, and the related url, but no title or indication of the content. My survey of the site has 35 pages. The Visio list is around 385 pages. You can see how pages are related on the server, not how a human moves through them. Below is small part of the site map. The entire map covers 12 letter-size sheets. Again, you could edit this, but at great effort.
