"It was a really, really outstanding place to use, just because it was really elegant - it fit where we were trying to go perfectly," said Freeman. "Jeff was really hospitable - he provided us with food, plates, he pretty much just let us have free run of the place."
With all the disparate elements involved in putting the film together... - among other things, the filmmakers have enlisted collaborators to write a musical score and add computer-generated graphics to the finished product - the film should be done around the end of September or early October, said Freeman. The filmmakers then plan to send the 45-minute film out to as many film festivals as possible, with presentation to large studios such as Miramax not out of the question.
"This is the most ambitious project we've ever done," said
Brown during the Tuesday evening shoot.
The film's major distribution, however, may end up being via the World Wide Web. Since the filmmakers are shooting the production entirely on digital video, they will be able to put the finished piece on film websites such as zoomculture.com - a Chapel Hill-based Internet group that is one of the film's sponsors - and atomfilms.com, meaning that anyone who wishes to do so can view the film from the privacy of their own computer screen.
Freeman - who fully intends filmmaking as a career - praised the contributions of his collaborators such as Brown, Betthauser (who had to step in during the shooting as one of the men in dark suits, due to an actor failing to show up), Logan ("our one-man crew") and the dozen others involved in the production. Making films, he
says, is hard work, best avoided by those without the energy and drive to put in a maximum effort.
"It just comes down to a lot of hard work, and that'll get you anywhere you want to be," said Freeman. "It's a lot of work, and it's all good fun, but it goes to show that if anybody ever wants to make a film, or ever wants to do anything with their life - put a little hard work into it, put some thought into it, and there you go. You've got it."
