I don't know that Walker coined the term himself; that's probably mine, but
the idea was definitely his: that we tend to feel good at times when things
are bad, e.g. when a hurricane is on the way. And in conversation,
schaddenfreud was one of his favorite saxonisms.
Apropos of your remark about things being over your head, I would venture to
suggest that one reason why the s. p. doesn't seem to be operative at the
moment is because it's all over everyone's head, including W. The fact that
it is makes me all the more schadden and so much les freud...
