Dear Percy-L:
Upon implementation of the new list service on October 1, there was an
unforeseeable distribution of messages to approximately 40 of our
previously valued members, whom we can only conclude to be presently lost
in the cosmos. Unfortunately, perhaps due to a mad bout of collective
ravening particles, they did not see fit to inform the list manager of the
closing of their now abandoned email accounts. The end result was the
battery of bounces descending upon the list the day the UNC service was
implemented.
Please accept our apologies for this occurrence, and all list members can
do their part in the future by unsubscribing themselves prior to changing
or abandoning their subscribed email account. The new UNC distribution
system will make subscribing and unsubscribing much easier in that links to
do both are embedded in the header of all messages distributed to the list.
Members should therefore be able to manage their account at will, for
instance in the case of an extended vacation when you wish your account to
be temporarily disabled. Alternatively, you may always contact the list
manager at <wpercy1@ibiblio.org>.
This message is being distributed via the old service at LSU to make
certain all are aware of the next stage of the transition to the UNC
service following the bounced message problem. We believe we have rooted
out all of the defunct email addresses from the list and are ready to
perform another test run with the UNC service. Each member should expect
approximately one hour after this message a second message in your email
box entitled "Bounce Test (via UNC)" as distributed on the UNC service. If
the second message does not arrive in your box before 5:00 p.m. Tuesday,
please send an email to <wpercy1@ibiblio.org> stating that you did not
receive the UNC distributed message and that you wish to remain on the
list. We will promptly correct the omission. (Note: those of you who have
recently unsubscribed should not receive the UNC distributed message, which
means you are no longer on the list upon final termination of the LSU
service.)
As for future bounces, these should be minimal if we have performed our job
correctly in making the current changes. All members will also make this
process easier if they themselves will unsubscribe email addresses they are
abandoning. Nevertheless, if and when bounces appear again, you can rest
assured that we will address them immediately. Please send all comments
related to this message that you may have to <wpercy1@ibiblio.org>.
Again, thank you for your patience.
Sincerely,
Henry Mills
