I have just signed on to the Percy list, and for purposes of
congeniality and collegiality wish to introduce myself.
I am an associate professor of English at Mars Hill College, NC,
with emphases in American literature, linguistics, and literary
theory. I received my PhD. in 1992 from UNC-Greensboro, where I wrote
a dissertation on W. Percy entitled "Toward a Triadic Theory of
Walker Percy: A Semiotic Reading of the Novels." My primary interest
in Percy (aside from simply enjoying his fiction) involves the
relationship between Percy's semiotic theory and his fiction. In my
work on Percy, I have noticed some interesting
similarities/connections between Percy's semiotic theory (as
articulated in "Toward a Triadic Theory of Meaning") and linguistic
pragmatics/speech act theory. If anyone is currently doing work in
this vein, I would enjoy hearing from you.
