Chronologically speaking, Percy could be described as a
postmodernist, but philosophically he is starkly opposed to many of
the basic concepts that cluster (however loosely) around the term
"postmodernism." Concerning the concept of a "self," for instance,
postmodernists tend to view it as entirely "constructed" rather than
essential. For all his existentialist leanings, Percy seems to
believe rather strongly in an essential self.
