since im sure you dont have enough to read I thought i might make the
following suggestion, which I think might clarify some of the problems
related to Percy and the reality or constructedness of the self... and of the
larger metaphysical issue of reality in general...
I've, been looking at Carl Hausman's book "Charles S. Peirce's Evolutionary
Philosophy" (Cambridge, 1993) recently and i think the last chapter might be
quite helpful on the issue of selves (if you give it a twist), (cf.
"Evolutionary Realism and the Linguistic Turn" pp. 194-224)
Hausman gives a nice summary of Rorty, Davidson, and Putnam on the issue of
reality and language along with a Peircean objection.
as relates to Percy, i am finding it illuminating to think about "selves",
wherever Hausman speaks of "secondness" or "dynamical objects" in his
Peircean critique of the 3 philosophers above in an attempt to perserve
realism without foundationalism.

ps. on a lighter note, any southerners out there (or perhaps i should just
say anyone) finding Billy Bob Thorten's Sling Blade to their liking as much
as i do?
