To the Editors of Salon:

First, I want to applaud your outstanding efforts at bringing quality
literary content and thought to the Internet community through the creative
mechanism of your "on-line" magazine. I, for one, continue to believe it
is sorely needed.

As Director of The Walker Percy Project, an Internet-based "literary
experiment" in its own right (description below), I also wish to thank you
for featuring a review of the recently released biography _Walker Percy: A
Life_ in your current issue as viewable at
http://www.salonmagazine.com/may97/sneaks/sneak.html. I am certain Patrick
Samway's long-awaited biography of Percy will only further enhance
appreciation for the creative genius that is Walker Percy's. In time, I
believe Dr. Percy is destined to be known as one of the late 20th century's
most original and provocative writers and thinkers given his significant
accomplishments in fiction and philosophy (i.e., semiotics). On a
synthetic level, Emerson, Dostoyevsky, and perhaps even Freud have little
to compare with Percy's unique and genuine blend of science, art, and
philosophy in the name of our humanity.

Perhaps these statements may seem brash, but that is precisely why The
Walker Percy Project now exists and is in its third year of ongoing
development. I invite your interest (and that of your readers if you care
to add a link) in the now burgeoning Percy community that is there
represented, all intent on exploring the vital and significant impact of
Percy's work on the post-modern consciousness. The project is freely
accessible at http://sunsite.unc.edu/wpercy and is hosted by The University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, archive of Percy's personal papers.

Sincerely,

Henry P. Mills
