All,

Although I posted the info on the film production, I must agree with the
recent assessments of the casting choices. I eagerly wished that the
producers would take advantage of some of the younger talents that have
cropped up recently rather than relying solely on actors whose box office
records are favorable. Robbins, his talent notwithstanding, is greying at
the temples and will be playing a man on the eve of his thirtieth birthday.
True, he has a youthful appearance at times, but if you've seen him recently,
you will see that it will be a stretch role for him.
Roberts does have a native Southern grace to her--viz. Steel Magnolias and
Something to Talk About,etc.--but the baggage of her many recent romantic
comedy roles will subvert the seriousness the Kate Cutrer role commands.
At any rate, with _The Moviegoer_, _Cold Mountain_, _As I Lay Dying_, and
several other Southern literary works currently in film production, 2000 will
be an interesting year for our area of expertise.

btw--I too have been lurking. I'm Brian Holofchak, and, having been on the
list for almost a year, this thread unfortunately was the first to which I
have responded. I joined last year when I was taking my Master's, writing my
thesis on Faulkner and working on a semester paper on Percy. I've always
been a fan of Percy, from when I was exposed to him as an undergrad at UNC.
Although I have not been as passionate as many of you appear to be judging
from the discourse of this list (which has been immensely enjoyable and
informative--believe you me), I have considered myself a Percyphile from the
beginning. I'll continue to lurk, if you don't mind, weighing in when I can
(I'm starting law school at Ole Miss in August) and continuing to enjoy the
discussion worthy of such a valuable artist.

cheers,
Brian
