Reception with light refreshments to follow
This year's program, free and open to the public, takes the symposium in a
slightly different direction. A self-effacing man and continually
available to up and coming writers, Walker Percy made an impact far beyond
Covington, the South, even the United States. Hence, the program this year
and in years to come will go beyond presentations solely on Dr. Percy's
work. W. Kenneth Holditch will explore why writers resist the label
"Southern," and Lewis Nordan will read from his forthcoming novel, _Boy
with a Loaded Gun_, due out in January. Finally, Will Campbell will offer
some reflections on his relationship with Walker Percy and on Percy's work.
After the program, speakers will be available to sign copies of their books.
W. Kenneth Holditch, Professor Emeritus of Literature at University
of New Orleans, is the editor of _In Old New Orleans_, and the author of
several critical essays and reviews on writers throughout the South.
Will D. Campbell, is the author of numerous books and articles on
the South, Southern Religion, and Literature, including _Brother to a
Dragonfly_ and _Forty Acres and a Goat: A Memoir_. He has written wonderful
reviews of Lewis Nordan's books. He collaborated with Walker Percy to found
_Katallegete_, a journal that dealt with religion, the arts, and culture.
Lewis Nordan is the author of seven highly acclaimed novels and
collections of short stories, including the award-winning _Wolf Whistle_.
He is Professor of Creative Writing and Writer in Residence at the
University of Pittsburgh.
