Is it just me, or does anyone else detect a shade of Colonel Kurtz in
the character of Dr. Sutter Vaught in The Last Gentleman? This thought
has occurred to me as Will Barrett reads the "mad" philosophical
ramblings contained in Sutter Vaught's casebook. (I must admit that I
have never read Conrad's Heart of Darkness and am relying here on
Francis Ford Coppola's interpretation in Apocalypse Now.) Despite the
many obvious differences, I find some interesting parallels between the
Will Barrett/Sutter Vaught relationship and the Capt. Willard/Col. Kurtz
relationship.
I might well be completely out in left field with this one, but would be
interested to hear what others think.
