First Annual Eudora Welty Film & Fiction Festival Held

[Editor's note: The following is a description of the festival held in 1996. The next festival is planned for 1998.]

The first Eudora Welty Film & Fiction Festival, to be held May 1-4, 1996, will honor the internationally-revered writer while raising funds to restore her birthplace and construct a writers' center on the grounds surrounding the home in Jackson, MS.

Nationally-acclaimed writers such as Thomas Harris, Richard Ford, Barry Gifford, Shelby Foote, Jane Ann Phillips, Ellen Douglas, and Kay Gibbons are among those who will participate. Many of these writers say they have been inspired by Miss Welty's work.

At the heart of the festival is a four-day writers' conference that will bring together fiction and non-fiction writers, poets, songwriters, screenwriters, and more from across the world. Concurrent workshops, readings, talks, and panel discussions will all be held during the four day event.

Mississippi arts and cultural groups such as New Stage Theatre, the Old Capitol Museum, and others will also participate in the festival by holding "sister" events in the months surrounding the Film & Fiction Festival. The Festival is a joint effort of the Mississippi Writers Association, the Junior League of Jackson, and the Mississippi Film Office.
