Eudora Welty Writers SymposiumAnnually, the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS hosts a major conference in honor of Miss Welty and her written works. Through the event, "The W" seeks to honor their most famous alumnus and her importance in American letters. MUW also boasts both a professorial chair and a building dedicated to Welty.Each year writers, educators, and Welty scholars attend the conference. Events at the conference include readings, panels, papers, and roundtable discussions. Past speakers have included writers William Styron and Kaye Gibbons, among others. The annual "Eudora Welty Prize" is awarded at the symposium to the author of the winning manuscript of interpretive scholarship in the humanitites. The winner earns a cash reward and publication of his or her manuscript with UPMS of Jackson. Miss Welty offered her respects to the event and the participants alike when she appeared at the conference in 1989, the year it was launched. For more information, contact:
