Welcome to "Eudora Welty on the Internet"!
From the editor's desk: A few words on what this resource is, its purpose, and what it could evolve into...
The idea for an Internet resource celebrating the fiction of Miss Welty was suggested to me in December, 1995, during a promotional trip to Jackson, Mississippi I made about the Walker Percy Project, which I had founded earlier that year. During my visit, numerous family members reminded me of Miss Welty's friendship with my great aunt, and my visit with staff of the University Press of Mississippi also confirmed how deeply appreciated Miss Welty was. When I also learned that the widely used e-mail program, "Eudora," was named in honor of one of Miss Welty's short stories, I received another prompt. It then only became a matter of time.
Two years later, that prompting has led to the creation of the resource here. The initial goals I have had are to try to approach Eudora Welty from the vantage point of someone who only knows "Eudora." This is an introductory resource seeking to provide an overview of the entire culture of Miss Welty, including basic commentary about her place in American (and international) letters, the multiplicy of events available to readers of her work, and basic resource materials for those wanting to delve deeper into her work, including bibliographies, annotations, and a bookstore. I hope the photographs will equally be of enjoyment to browsers of this archive.
Whether or not this project will evolve into a larger, more comprehensive resource as systematically organized like the Walker Percy Project remains in large part up to the many scholars, institutions, and parties who are associated with preserving and commemorating her life's work. For this project's part, it will strive to always provide ready access to current news and contact information about all Welty related events that reach the editor's desk. Hopefully, this will offer a unqiue service.
Thanks are due to several parties for making this possible. For the family and friends who gave to this project through encouragment and monetary support, to the University Press of Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Archives, the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, and the Southern Quarterly for their cooperation in providing information and materials to the project, as well as the larger financial sponsorship of Qualcomm, Inc., and Interactive Architex. Special thanks to the support staff of the Walker Percy Educational Project, Inc., and all the English teachers who have encouraged my interest in literature and writing through the years.
