COMING UP ON NPR'S PERFORMANCE TODAY - OCTOBER 23 - 30, 1995 Monday, October 23 Hour 1--Does the world really need another recording of "The Planets"? Yes--if it's this performance of John Eliot Gardiner conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra, says Tim Smith, PT commentator and music critic for the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. In a new CD, Deutsche Grammophon has coupled Gustav Holst's "Planets" with a splashy performance of "The Warriors" by Percy Grainger. Tuesday, October 24 Hour 1--Martin talks with Helmuth (HEL-moot) Rilling, director of the Stuttgart Bach Akademie, about "Requiem of Reconciliation," one of the most ambitious projects designed to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. Rilling assembled 14 composers from 12 countries to compose the Requiem, which received its world premiere in Stuttgart, Germany in August, and has just been released on compact disc. But when performing works by Franz Schubert, she rose far above the music's technical challenges, pulling everything together and keeping her audience enthralled through long movements. Critic Leslie Gerber reviews a new set of 3 CDs featuring Kraus playing Schubert's complete Impromptus, the "Wanderer" Fantasy, and Sonatas in A major, A minor, and B-flat major.
