Monday, June 20th, 2005Michael Campbell of New Zealand won the US Open in Pinehurst yesterday. He did so by withstanding a late charge from golf’s number one ranked player, Tiger Woods. The weeklong event was expected to pump as much as 125 million dollars into the state’s economy. Unlike the last go round in 1999, more of that money stayed in the village itself. The Other Side of the Golf Course
Friday, June 10th, 2005When golf fans pour into Pinehurst for the U-S-Open next week they’ll see a lavish resort town with top notch golf courses and million dollar homes. But this wealth escapes several nearby unincorporated communities where in some cases, there isn’t even a working water system to irrigate a lawn or golf course. Residents living in these neighborhoods and civil rights lawyers say they hope the golf tournament brings more attention to the situation. Leoneda Inge reports.
