Mortgage Lending Practices

Last Sunday, the Charlotte Observer began a three part series called “The Hard Truth in Lending.” The journalists working on the report analyzed records from 25 of the nation’s largest lenders. The results showed that African Americans who bought homes last year were four times as likely as White homebuyers to get high interest rates for mortgage loans. Host Frank Stasio talks about discrimination in the lending industry with: Peter Skillern, executive director of Community Reinvestment ASsociation of North Carolina; Bill Himpler from the American Financial Services Association; Stella Adams, director of the NC Fair Housing Center; and Binyamin Applebaum, reporter with the Charlotte Observer.
