On
April 30, 1945, an unidentified unit of the 45th Infantry Division
liberated the 500 inmates interned at the Neufahrn subcamp of
the Dachau north of Munich, The 157th an d180th Infantry
Regiments of the 45th Infantry Division were operating in the
area at the time.
The Neufahrn inmates were used
as slave labor for airfield construction.
On April 10, 1945, 500 inmates
were sent from the main Dachau concentration camp to the
Neufahrn subcamp bringing the total to 800.
Prior to liberation, the SS
sent 300 Neufahrn inmates on a death march which ended on April
29, 1945 at Hallbergmoos, 10 kilometers/6miles to the east.. An
unknown number survived. Mortality on death marches was as high
as 50%
