Graduate Scholarships open to International Students
Graduate Scholarships in Reproductive and Sexual Health Law at the University of Toronto, Canada
The Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto is pleased to announce the creation of a Graduate Scholarship in Reproductive Health Law, to be awarded to students pursuing the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) or, in exceptional cases, Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) within the Faculty’s Graduate Programme. The Scholarship is designed to permit a law graduate from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean, Central or Eastern Europe, or Asia, who has a demonstrated record in the protection of reproductive and sexual rights to undertake advanced research and study in this emerging field of law. Applications from Brazil, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, or the countries in Central and Eastern Europe are particularly encouraged. The Graduate Programme at the Faculty of Law is designed to permit students of outstanding merit to undertake advanced research and study in law. It is a competitive programme admitting approximately 50 students each year from all regions of the world.
The Graduate Fellowship in Reproductive Health Law is designed to enable a law graduate to explore the legal and ethical issues in reproductive and sexual health, such as the multiple causes of maternal mortality; barriers to availability of and access to reproductive health services; the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS; and abusive sexual relationships. Beyond the required graduate seminar in Alternative Approaches to Legal Scholarship and the foundation course in Reproductive and Sexual Health Law, course work is designed on an individual basis.
Students are encouraged to select other courses relevant to their plan of study, such as courses addressing medical law and ethics, national and international protection of human rights including women’s rights, family law issues including violence against women, feminism and the law, law and development and law and society issues. Given the Faculty’s support of interdisciplinary approaches to legal scholarship, students holding this Fellowship may also register for courses in other departments of the university and in Women’s Studies and Bioethics through the Collaborative Degree Programmes.
In addition to formal courses, students are encouraged to participate in workshops held at the Faculty of Law, the Joint Centre for Bioethics and the Centre for Research on Women’s Health. Students are also encouraged to undertake an internship related to their research for approximately 10 weeks with a relevant organization, arranged through the Faculty’s International Human Rights Programme.
Academic Requirements
Applicants to the LL.M. degree programme must hold a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. or JD) degree from a recognized university, or possess equivalent qualifications in law, and must normally have achieved a B+ or comparable standing.
The full-time LL.M. programme is designed as a 12-month programme. The thesis intensive LL.M. involves a minimum eight credit hours of coursework and the writing of a major thesis of approximately 100 to 120 pages under the supervision of a faculty member. The coursework intensive LL.M. involves a minimum of twenty-four credit hours of coursework and the writing of a shorter thesis of approximately 50 to 60 pages, in the context of one course.
An applicant for the S.J.D. programme must either hold an LL.M. from a recognized university or possess equivalent qualifications (e.g. significant publication record), and must normally have achieved a B+ or comparable standing. The S.J.D. programme has a residency requirement of one academic year; however, the completion of the thesis work usually takes a further two years beyond this requirement and students are required to remain in residence as long as they are in receipt of scholarship funds.
Admission to both programs is competitive and not all candidates holding the minimum qualifications can be admitted.
English Fluency – Written and Oral
It is essential that applicants to either programme have a sufficient command of the written and spoken English language. Applicants whose primary language is not English and who have not completed at least one year of coursework at a post-secondary institution where the language of instruction is English must have completed one of the following tests at the time an application is submitted: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB). Details of these tests and minimum score requirements can be found in the application package.
Value (subject to funding availability)
Fellowships provide a living stipend of up to CDN$15,000. In addition, this scholarship will also cover academic tuition and student fees. The scholarship may also include a stipend to support a ten week internship.
Terms and Conditions
After completion of the graduate programme, Scholarships holders must return to their home country and reside there for a minimum of two years. The purpose of the two-year home residency requirement is to ensure that the Scholarship holders fulfil the objective of the Fellowship programme, the international protection and promotion of reproductive and sexual rights in the targeted countries.

Proposals must focus on very simple cropping systems research that can benefit
smallholder farmers in developing countries, especially rural women farmers.
b) Participatory Research:
Applicants must use simple experiments executed by cooperating farmers under guidance by the researchers (see details about the location of individual on-farm experiments), and conduct their research with the active participation of the farmers, including women farmers. This requires that farmers be involved in all stages of the experiment on their land, including all the stages of land preparation, seeding, and harvesting.
Research proposals must include details of the comparisons envisioned between the traditional cropping practice of cooperating farmers and the side-by-side alternative cropping practice, which must include some type of leguminous crop or plant. Please consult the attached diagram that shows how a simple on-farm experiment might be compared to either one or two alternative cropping systems. Thus, experiments must compare crop yields from traditional unicrop practice with yields of the same crop combined with some kind of leguminous plant grown either simultaneously with the traditional crop, or perhaps in some cases, grown before the traditional crop is planted.
Similar experiments executed in rural school gardens, conducted with the help and advice of the Fellowship holder, and with the participation of both students and teachers, are also encouraged.
The research procedures must include extensive dissemination of the research results. Smallholder farmers, including rural women farmers, should be the major focus of such publicity:
a) The results
should be presented in formats that can reach the various stakeholders, such as
field days, farmer visits, briefs for policy-makers;
b) Dissemination will actively involve farmers, extension workers, local
development initiatives, and agricultural organizations by addressing other
smallholder farmers, especially rural women farmers;
c) The publicity should include farmers’ visits and farmer-to-farmer teaching
and learning.

Duration
Award tenure corresponds with the period of field research. In general, this
will be between eighteen months and twenty-four months.
Value
The value of the award is up to CA $30,000. If there is strong evidence of
significant potential benefits, the award may be extended upon re-application.
Progress
Reports
Fellowship holders will commit to provide IDRC with three brief progress reports
per year.
Applications
A letter of support must be included in the application package from a legally
recognized institution in the country of research with whom the applicant will
be affiliated. This letter must endorse the proposal, confirm the locale of
work, and outline the types of institutional support they will provide to the
student. The letter must specifically include details of transportation
arrangements to experimental plots. The applicant’s host research institution
will be expected to certify that the research protocol has been reviewed by a
qualified statistician and that it meets an internationally high standard, in
terms of experimental and survey designs.
Applicants are encouraged to contact member institutions of The Consultative
Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) (www.cgiar.org) to explore
the possibility of conducting their research in conjunction with one of the
member institutions.
Applications will be evaluated according to IDRC priorities and criteria, such
as relevance to sustainable and equitable development, as well as quality of the
research proposal and suitability of the candidate.
Re-applicants, whose research proposal was reviewed and was unsuccessful, must
explain, in a covering letter, what changes have been made since the last
application and specify where to find the changes in the proposal. Please note
that Centre policy stipulates that an individual cannot apply more than twice,
if unsuccessful, for the same IDRC award. However, this policy does not apply
for Internship Awards.
If there are ethical questions connected with the research, the applicant may,
at IDRC's discretion, be required to submit the appropriate approval from the
Ethic's Committee of the university.
Please submit all documents listed in the List of Supporting Documents to be Submitted. Complete applications must be received at the Centre by the deadline. Incomplete applications will NOT be considered for the competition. Applications must be sent to the following address:

Example of types of loans available in Ontario, Canada
Ontario Student Assistance Program
To be eligible for assistance under each of these plans, a student must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and fulfill certain requirements for residency in Ontario. The amount of financial aid awarded is determined by a need-testing procedure. It is strongly recommended that students apply by June 30 to ensure that their applications are processed by September. Currently, it takes six to eight weeks to process a regular OSAP application.
All of the government programmes described in this text are modified and restructured annually to reflect the changing needs of students from the Province of Ontario. It is, therefore, recommended that you discuss your specific financial requirements with a Student Loans and Awards Officer in the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Office as early as possible.
Canada Student Loans Plan
This is a federal government plan, administered by the provincial government, which provides loans to students who can demonstrate financial need for completion of any level of study. Loans are available to full-time students enrolled at recognized post-secondary institutions anywhere in the world. The federal government also provides Canada Student Loans for part-time students who can demonstrate financial need. These loans cover a student's costs for tuition, books, transportation, day care and incidentals and are interest-bearing after 30 days. Loan recipients must begin repaying the loans, principal plus interest, on the first day of the seventh month following the completion of their studies.
Ontario Student Loans Plan
This plan provides loans to full-time students whose financial needs are not fully covered by the Canada Student Loans Plan.
Ontario Special Bursary Plan
This plan helps exceptionally needy students who are unable to attend school full-time but need post-secondary training to improve their job prospects. Bursaries are available to such part-time students enrolled at recognized post-secondary institutions in Ontario only.
Ontario Work-Study Programme The Work-Study Programme complements the original plans in the OSAP package. It offers part-time jobs to students who can demonstrate financial need during the school year to help them meet exceptional costs, often unexpected and not recognized under OSAP. It also helps students who lack the resources expected under OSAP criteria or, whose assessed need under OSAP is not met because of loan maximums or, who do not wish to borrow further due to high debt load. Costs of this plan are shared by the provincial government and the University.
