Ware's official press release...
Tenor saxophonist David S. Ware, a key player in the New York avant-garde jazz scene for over 25 years, is on the road this fall to celebrate the September 22 release of his Columbia Jazz debut album Go See the World. Ware, signed to Columbia by recently appointed Creative Consultant Branford Marsalis, is touring with his longstanding quartet, which features Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Susie Ibarra on drums and percussion. The quartet has been called "one of the miracle energy bands of the day" by Gary Giddins in the Village Voice, and the new album earned a glowing four-star review in the September issue of Down Beat. Ware appears on the cover of Octobers Jazziz magazine and is featured in Jazz Times and Magnet as well.
Ware, a doggedly individualistic saxophonist whose music has often been likened to that of John Coltrane in his late period of exploration, has been the subject of tremendous critical praise in the press, from major newspapers and magazines to underground alternative fanzines, and his albums have been fixtures on college radio charts throughout his career. "Hes a pure musician and a great instrumentalist whos hones his craft to a high level," says Marsalis. "This guy is a wellspring of expression. I hear melody when David plays. Thats the basis of his music. David is a great asset to Columbia Jazz and he will continue to develop and grow."
"Its part of a dream for me to be on Columbia, because of the artists who have been here before me," says Ware, who has previously recorded for small independent American, European, and Japanese labels. "Hopefully it will help people look upon my music in a different light, to draw connections to the past and to see how it fits in the tradition."
