accuracy of records
I used to blame the dreadful misspellings in census records on the
abilities of the census takers. As my great grandfather was known to be
a drinker, if I imagine him giving census info while drunk, it now makes
total sense!
Another error example that is carried over FOREVER is an error in a
birth certificate that was never corrected. My own "little" sister was
born on May 6 -- I know -- I was sixteen at the time. The birth was
recorded in error as May 5. My mom never got around to correcting it.
School records reflected the date on the birth certificate. When my
sister died at the age of 27, news reports and her obituary reported the
official date. And yes, even her tombstone carries the uncorrected
date.
