WASHINGTON--In the latest blow to one of the Pentagon's most controversial
programs, the Marine Corps on Thursday suspended the commander of its MV-22
Osprey training squadron amid allegations that he had urged subordinates to
falsify maintenance records.
Lt. Col. Odin Fred Leberman, commanding officer of Marine Tilt-Rotor Aircraft
Squadron-204, was relieved of duty after officials received an anonymous
letter and an audiotape that allegedly recorded Leberman telling subordinates
to falsify information to "put the aircraft in a better light," said Marine
Maj. Patrick Gibbons, a spokesman.

Pentagon says commander admits he altered records

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 - A Marine commander has acknowledged that he falsified
maintenance records of the V-22 Osprey squadron, Pentagon officials said
today, as details emerged on the accusations that the commander ordered
subordinates to cover up problems in the Osprey aircraft program.
In an anonymous letter mailed to the Navy last week, someone claiming to be a
mechanic in the Marine Corps' only V-22 squadron said that efforts to falsify
maintenance and performance reports had been "going on for over two years."

The text of a letter sent anonymously to the secretary of the Navy regarding
orders to falsify V-22 maintenance records.

To whom it may concern:
I am a mechanic on the MV-22 Osprey. I work for VMMT-204 in New River, N.C.
The tape I have included contains a brief that was given by the commanding
officer of VMMT-204, Lt. Col. Lieberman (sic). In this brief he directs us to
lie about aircraft reporting until "milestone 3." Milestone 3 is when the
Bell and Boeing go into full rate production. What we have been doing is
reporting aircraft that are down, as in they can't fly, as being up, as in
full mission capable.

JACKSON, Miss. (January 19, 2001 3:43 p.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) -
An investigator from a secret state agency concluded in 1964 there were no
signs of foul play after he examined the burned-out station wagon of three
civil rights workers who vanished in Mississippi.
The revelation about the infamous case, in which the three turned out to have
been slain, was included in 1,800 pages of documents released Thursday from
the files of the state-funded Sovereignty Commission.

MOUNT HOLLY - Burlington County officials and state historians proudly
unveiled a 215-year-old public ledger that was returned last month after it
went up for sale on the online trading site eBay.
Accompanying officials at the Old Burlington County Jail were representatives
of the Fountain of Life Center, a Christian organization based in Florence
that helped return the ledger.

Safe havens on the Freedom Line

While oysters were being shucked in the kitchen, and distinguished crowds of
diners from New York's business and political establishment feasted at Thomas
Downing's Oyster House at the corner of Wall and Broad Streets, the
proprietor's son, George, led fugitive slaves down into the basement. Amid
bottles of wine and molasses, they found shelter from the bands of
blackbirders, bounty hunters roaming the streets in search of runaways.
Born as free blacks, the Downings were committed abolitionists. Their
restaurant, across from Federal Hall, is known to have been a station on the
Underground Railroad from the 1830's to the 1860's, a safe and secret haven
on the route north toward Canada and freedom.

City urged to find pauper records

by Norma Adams-Wade
The mystery surrounding Opportunity Park could have been avoided if
government officials had kept better pauper records, a cemetery expert told
the Dallas Park and Recreation Board on Thursday.
"Our city and county have done a great disservice because there are no
records [of pauper burials]," Frances James said.
The board closed the South Dallas park in November after a
cemetery-preservation group said the city built the facility on "sacred
ground" - an old paupers cemetery.

OLYMPIA -- Several bills making the rounds in Olympia would change when -- or
if -- people can see what are now generally considered public documents.
One, Senate Bill 5117, bars release of police crime reports until a suspect
is charged -- and then only if the person seeking documents can convince a
judge that the suspect's right to a fair trial won't be affected.
The two other laws, sponsored by Sen. Bob Morton, R-Orient, would make
letters and e-mails between constituents and state lawmakers private.
One would grant such communication the same confidential status given to
lawyers, doctors and members of the clergy.

Al Gore may not have invented the Internet, but it was on the Clinton-Gore
administration's watch that the Internet took off. The first White House Web
site was unveiled in October 1994.
Thus at noon Saturday, the first cybertransition will take place.
With the click of a mouse, more than 20,200 White House documents will move
-- without a packing box or handtruck in sight -- to make way for material
from a new president, George W. Bush.

Thousands of rare, centuries-old books looted from Holocaust victims and
captured by the US Army after World War II have been gathering dust in
several university libraries across the United States, a long-awaited report
by a presidential commission revealed this week.
Harvard, Brandeis, and Yale universities alone received more than 10,000
books, periodicals, and newspapers whose rightful owners may never be found.

For perhaps only the second time in its history, the nation's oldest
university may be forced to reveal the confidential documents of a tenure
case.
A Superior Court judge has rejected Harvard's motion to dismiss a lawsuit
filed by former assistant professor Peter Berkowitz, a conservative political
scientist denied tenure in the government department in 1999.

Sam Rosenfeld's pawnshop on a busy street in suburban Reseda has the feel of
1940s film noir.
Merchandise climbs the walls of the cluttered shop--cameras, light meters,
tools, guitars, banjos, statues, vintage radios and TVs, drain gougers,
swords and rifles. Plus scores of watches and rings, one with a Sultan's head
he'll sell you for $2,000, negotiable.
The place is so teeming with goods that even Brunhilda, his store mannequin
mascot, is loaded with scuba gear for sale. You can buy her too.
