Report from Paul Scott
Late Thursday I asked Paul Scott (Harris County Records Manager) how he had
fared in the great Houston Flood. here are his comments;
<snip>
I was pleasantly surprised when I came in on Sunday to find that the Records
Center was high and dry and even less than the usual water intrusion from
drains, under doors, etc. when we have a gully washer. Most of my staff is
conducting normal operations although most of our customers can't be
contacted.
Other departments were not so fortunate. I had to coordinate a contract
with BMC CAT for freeze drying wet records and reference books (mostly the
Engineer's). We're up to about 200 cu. ft. so far with more to come when we
can get into the areas.
I'm also in the middle of putting together a deal with ImageMax to salvage
microfilm that got immersed.
Today I mostly worked on cleaning and drying building plans needed for
repairs to the new Criminal Justice Center that someone insisted on storing
in that basement.
I'm about to leave for home detouring through Humble to deliver a routine
request for Judge Lawrence since the normal inter-office mail run is
suspended.
I had already considered all the above mentioned contingencies so was as
ready as one can be. There is one thing that did catch me a
flatfooted-destruction of wet files. I'm expecting to find about 200 cu.
ft. of wet inmate medical files that we will not restore as they have a
5-year retention period (of which three to four years have passed) and are
seldom used and never really needed. Being medical records, they must be
physically destroyed. Harris County Recycling does all of our shredding but
probably can't handle this trash. I'm expecting to have to contract with a
commercial shredding company to get rid of it.
Oh yes, my home and the homes of my staff were not affected. We are all
very fortunate.
