Re: Professional couriers for archival items?

Here at the Oregon State University Archives, we microfilm the personnel
records and send the film to a processor near Portland, using UPS. We fill
out a form and send it to the Mailing Room, who actually gives it to UPS.
Only once in the five years I have been here has UPS lost a reel, and then
they did an excellent job of tracking it down.

Of course, we don't advertise the fact on the package that this contains
OSU's personnel records. The form just says it is a reel of microfilm. We
do require that the company ship the original in a separate bag from the two
copies, as a safeguard against loss. We are very happy (with the one
exception) of the good track record UPS has had in transporting these reels.

I am not sure if these records qualify as actual archival materials, since
they have a 75 year retention, officially. Unofficially, they will be kept
forever.

This is very interesting. We are in the midst of
a microfilming project, and the company we are
using always ships archival material (and expects
to receive it) via UPS. We were told it was standard
& perfectly safe. Now I'm wondering...
