
Dr. Stone began her career as a social worker after graduating from Sarah Lawrence College. She later received a master's degree in social work from Atlanta University and a doctorate in education from Northwestern University. Among her many accomplishments, Stone organized the Southeastern Black Press Institute and the OIC Archival Project in Philadelphia. Dr. Stone served as director of curriculum in Afro-American Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1974-1979. She then worked as an associate professor in the field until her death in 1991. Stone was also a leader in several campus organizations during her time at UNC-CH, including the BCC Planning Committee, the Campus Y Advisory Board and the Black Student Movement. Dr. Stone touched the lives of many students and fellow colleagues. She will be greatly missed as a professor, mentor, daughter, mother and friend.
