Re: Passive Aorist in Gal 2:13

Thank you for the thoughtful responses so far, I will have a look at the material linked to. I accept that this verb is not found in the active voice, so I will amend my secondary question to, how might Paul have written, "and the other Jews were joined by him in this hypocrisy." if that i...

Re: Passive Aorist in Gal 2:13

Hi again Wes,

Having read further, Duff does go on to say that there are also Passive Deponents, and lists four that he indicates are the only four in the NT, has he missed one?

Thanks,

Tim

Re: Passive Aorist in Gal 2:13

Hi Wes, Thanks for responding. Your answer seems not to line up with Duff who indicates that deponent verbs use the middle voice for the active meaning, but when they occur in the passive they do have a passive meaning. Could you point me to a resource, preferably online, that explores this further....

Hi from Tim Carter

Hi, I am Tim, a Pioneer Minister, church planting in the UK. Took NT Greek at Bible college and try to keep it from getting too rusty. Sometimes hit questions that the books won't answer and miss the times at college when I could take the question to class and get some help. Hope you well bear with ...

Re: Galatians 2:15, agreement of adjective

Hi Wes, I agree that if it is a noun then the usual translation stands, but I'm interested to learn how one can tell that it's a noun. My dictionary indicates that it's an adjective, Strong's indicates that it's an adjective, and Duff suggests that adjectival nouns are accompanied by an article. So ...

Galatians 2:15, agreement of adjective

Hi, I must be having a bad day. In Galatians 2:15. Ἡμεῖς φύσει Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ οὐκ ἐξ ἐθνῶν ἁμαρτωλοί, I can see that the first and second clauses are fairly strongly separated by the conjunction which I guess leads to the standard translation, "We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinne...

Passive Aorist in Gal 2:13

In Gal 2:13 there is a 3rd person, plural, passive, aorist: συνυπεκρίθησαν in the phrase καὶ συνυπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ [καὶ] οἱ λοιποὶ Ἰουδαῖοι, This seems to be universally translated as "and the other Jews joined him in this hypocrisy". My question is why, given that the aorist is in the passi...
