John 16.23: ἐμὲ

One last question for this round: I have a question on John 16.23: “καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἐρωτήσετε οὐδέν·” I would like to know if the position of “ἐμὲ” lends a particular emphasis to the word or if that is the normal position for a direct object. If there is no particular emphasis, it wou...

John 16.26b: “καὶ οὐ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν πατέρα περὶ ὑμῶν·”

I made the following query in a reply to a reply to an original post, but it seems to have gotten lost in the chain of replies. So I'll try posting it as a new topic. My question is about John 16.26b: “καὶ οὐ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν πατέρα περὶ ὑμῶν·” James Stinti confirmed my suspicion that &...

Re: John 16.26

Thank you, James, for your helpful answer. Now that I know that “ἐγὼ” is emphatic, where does that take us as far as translating this phrase go? John 16.26b: “καὶ οὐ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν πατέρα περὶ ὑμῶν·” Some commentators say that the sense is something like: “ it goes without saying that...

John 16.26

Hello B-Greek friends. I have a question concerning John 16.26: “ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου αἰτήσεσθε, καὶ οὐ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν πατέρα περὶ ὑμῶν·” I would like to know what the sense of the middle voice is in “αἰτήσεσθε”. In Gianfranco Nolli’s Italian translation, it says it me...

Re: Introduction

My initial reaction, having read the Greek, is that the nit-picky exactness of how one translates the Greek does not matter. The main point is "He is not here, for He has risen, Alleluia!" Shirley Rollinson PS - if you want to study some more Greek, at your own pace, and reading parts of ...

Re: σουδάριον in John 20.7

Thank you, Jonathan Robie, for this analysis. I, too, already preferred the second interpretation. Now I know that from the linguistic point of view it has, if not certainty, at least justification. Evidently, we are not meant to know the "mechanics" of how Jesus rose. That is probably bes...

Re: σουδάριον in John 20.7

If I have understood the words correctly, then 1. It's χωρὶς which creates the translation "separate" (contra Jean above). 2. The difference may come from how χωρὶς ἐντετυλιγμένον is interpreted. It could be possible to take it as tightly connected, χωρὶς ἐντετυλιγμένον = folded to be sep...

Re: σουδάριον in John 20.7

I was thinking that the idea of "separate" comes from the word χωρὶς.

σουδάριον in John 20.7

I included this question in my Introduction, but then I thought that it might not get seen there, so I'll repeat it here. I hope this doesn't create any confusion. I have a question about John 20.7: “καὶ τὸ σουδάριον, ὃ ἦν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, οὐ μετὰ τῶν ὀθονίων κείμενον ἀλλὰ χωρὶς ἐντετυλιγμένον...
