Re: Understanding the Nuances of the Aorist Tense in Koine Greek

Nearly a fortnight ago, katyperry wrote I’ve been revisiting some New Testament passages lately and came across interesting uses of the aorist tense that don’t seem to fit the typical “punctiliar” description. For instance, in John 11:35—ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, the verb appears to express more than just...

Re: Good Use of AI: Classics for NT folk

Hi Jonathan, Let me start with an aside: it's been quite a while since I looked at BGreek; thanks for your role in keeping it going. Your post on AI caught my eye. I think it's an important post and important topic. A friend, recently returned from Ephesus, asked me to translate for him the Greek of...

Re: Can εἰσενέγκῃς have a passive meaning?

εἰσενέγκῃς takes a direct object ἡμᾶς, and is not passive. On the other hand, there may be reasons for Moule's claiming that the expression quoted "need mean no more than ‘do not let us be brought into’." Such reasons are theologically based, however, and are not grammatically compelled. I...

Re: A papyrus for linguistic fun and profit...

In Barry's latest challenge, the final line reads
τῆι ιϛ ἀπὸ ὥρας θ.
It may be helpful to note that there's a table of the Greek numerals at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_numerals. Important to know these to turn up for dinner at the right time.

Re: Question concerning κατα

Tony Pope wrote Colin Hemer wrote an article* in 1975 regarding Acts 27, in answer to a claim that the Melita (Μελίτη) was not Malta but Mljet in the Adriatic. *C. J. Hemer, 'Euraquilo and Melita' Journal of Theological Studies 26.1 1975 100-111. The discussion about κατά is on p.104 note 4. Thanks ...

Re: 1 John 5:7-8

Leonard Jayawardena writes Daniel Wallace considers the interpretation given in the Expositors Greek Testament for the masculine participle (that is constructio ad sensum) and rejects it in favour of the explanation that the mas. participle is due to the personification of the three witnesses (spiri...

Re: 1 John 5:7-8

Leonard asks, Do you now understand my problem? Leonard, I'm not sure that I do. If the focus of your question is 1 John 5:7-8, 7 ὅτι τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες, 8 τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ τὸ αἷμα, καὶ οἱ τρεῖς εἰς τὸ ἕν εἰσιν. then Barry's response is relevant. Despite the EGT comment, the natura...

Re: A papyrus for linguistic fun and profit...

Hi Philip, A few notes additional to those Barry has already offered. >8. from me in the couryard. and the house...of Sekondas he investigated and….my own house they investigated… I'd retain the passives of the original (ὁ ο[ἶκος ... Σεκόνδας ἠραύνηται ... ὁ ἐμ[ὸς] οἶκος ἠραύνητ[αι) Secunda's house ...

Re: Help request re quotation from a Greek Father

The etymology of Bible in English is from βιβλία, but in the fathers, they use γραφή or γραφαί to refer to the Scripture(s). That suggested a back translation to me. I want to acknowledge that Stephen Hughes also refers to the idea of back translation, which I overlooked when writing my previous re...

Re: Help request re quotation from a Greek Father

Well, that was a mawkish rendering. The word moves means either good or bad medicine (restorative or destructive) at different times in its history. Stephen Hughes in the Post-Atticism - Ο Ερωτόκριτος του Βιντσέντζου Κορνάρου thread wrote:φαρμάκιν - the Classical form is φάρμακον "medicine&quo...
