Re: Google Custom Search for B-Greek

Just tested exactly what you've put above, Jonathan: λογος brought back only 3 results; λόγος returned 24,700 results.

Certainly works then. :)

Re: A papyrus for linguistic fun and profit...

The voyage by Antaeopolite is very vexing, and each day I am depressed because of it, and am very worried by the matter. If it is necessary to give a fee to the brother of the mother of the son* of Axilla, you do well by giving it after you have received* it from Sarapion out of my own expense. Rem...

Re: A papyrus for linguistic fun and profit...

Dionysius invites you to dine at his children's wedding* tomorrow at the (house?) of Ischyrion, that being the 30th, from the 9th hour. * It is plural, but not quite sure that works here in English translation. Interesting that both this and the previous one just use dative article + genitive of pe...

Re: Gal. 1:15-20 σαρκὶ καὶ αἵματι... τὸν ἀδελφὸν

In this interpretation, James is understood to be both an apostle and a blood brother. I would agree that is what Galatians is getting at here. Thus, might the idea of "the brother" connect meaningfully with the earlier idea of "flesh and blood"? Well, I'm not quite sure "m...

Re: In Deuteronomy 12:5 lxx, what is the sense of ἐκλέξηται?

"may choose" is an easy enough understanding. Robertson on the aorist subjunctive (p. 848; 18.2.1c): There is only relative time (future), and that is not due to the tense at all. The subjunctive is future in relation to the speaker, as is often true of the optative, though the optative st...

Re: pronunciation difference between η and ει

The main resource for these sort of questions is still F. T. Gignac's A Grammar of the Greek Papyri of the Roman and Byzantine Periods (released 1976). On η for υ and vice-versa, he states (Vol. 1 p. 262): a. υ x η· This interchange occurs frequently in all phonetic conditions throughout the Roman a...

Re: pronunciation difference between η and ει

That depends on who you ask (and on the century), but more or less, yes, both η and ει (and ι as well) started to have the same pronunciation, and still do in modern Greek.
