Re: θεὸς πατήρ and convertible propositions (per Wallace)

1. Is the appositional phrase θεὸς πατήρ a convertible proposition (per Wallace)? 2. If so, does this mean that πατήρ ("the Father") is the only θεὸς ("God")? Also, on this subject, I told someone that even if θεὸς ("God") is πατήρ ("the Father"), it does not...

Re: Wallace and the present gnomic

David, Barry, thank you kindly, sirs, for your comments...most helpful. I'm inclined to what you guys are saying in terms of a "vanilla" use of the participle in John 3:16, and, as you, I see contextual reasons being the decisive factor. I was trying to unpick his mind on the participle in...

Re: Wallace and the present gnomic

David, thanks for your comments. Excuse me if I ask a few more questions. How do you classify the present participle in John 3:16. What category do you put it in? Is it the progressive (descriptive) or something else? Guys, how would you classify or describe both participles in Romans 3:11 (οὐκ ἔστι...

Re: Wallace and the present gnomic

Brothers, thanks for the salutary reminder of context being king, and that even the experts have feet of clay! Only in the last year or so have I studied Wallace’s work in earnest; prior to that I tended to dip into various grammars and exegetical commentaries. I did do a cursory search on πιστεύων ...

Re: Wallace and the present gnomic

Thanks, guys. With all due respect to Wallace (whose claims I will not have a chance to examine until later), I would argue that he is simply wrong – the present participle is neither customary nor gnomic. Especially used substantively, the participle tends simply to describe the referent in terms o...

Wallace and the present gnomic

Wallace puts πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων (present participle), of John 3:16, under the customary present because of John’s stress on continual belief. [GGBB, 522, 523.] He also says that there are other times when πᾶς ὁ + the present participle are not gnomic. [GGBB, 523.] Yet, he says πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων in John 3:1...

Re: Relative adjective

Barry/David, thanks for the comments. Barry, my question arose from the “relative” aspect of the relative adjective. When I said, “I don’t see how the correlation/relation can be tied to hosoi’s adjectival nature, for in that case every adjective would be correlative/relative”, I was making a statem...

Relative adjective

Guys, I’m looking for your help here. Wallace refers to the category of a relative adjective. [Wallace, Basics of New Testament Syntax , 288, 289, 290, 291.] I’ve searched my grammar books for this category and cannot find it. What does this category mean? I’ve been looking at Acts 13:48. Hosoi (fro...
