Re: discorse: Athanasius On the incarnation
Is there a Critical Apparatus to this at all? I see that Archibald has omitted translating ὁ Σωτήρ/the saviour, so just wondering whether that's an oversight/purposeful omission. There are quite a few things in the translation that also don't add up, example: καὶ μὴ νομίσῃς ὅτι φύσεως ἀκολουθίᾳ σῶμα...

Re: Conjugation of ποιέω: ἐποίησα
I'm not quite sure what Bill Mounce says on this, but it sounds to me that you're either confusing the imperfect and the aorist, or are thinking in terms of the 2nd aorist and not the 1st aorist. Double check what Mounce says concerning the 1st aorist. Also, as we're dealing with an -εω verb, this m...

Re: Recommend papyri for teaching?
Archive.org has quite a few of 'The Oxyrhynchus Papyri' volumes there, several of which contain translations of the papyri contained within:

Re: Finding Searchable Texts of Jewish Apocalyptic Literature
The NIGTC is probably more referring to 2 Edras 7:113 (4 Ezra 7:113) as an example of the Apocalyptic literature 'in which the sequence of ages plays a significant role', rather than an example of the usage of συντέλεια (τοῦ) αἰῶνος. The Latin is as follows: dies enim iudicii erit finis temporis hui...

Re: John 3:2 Ῥαββί (רַבִּי) and διδάσκαλος
Actually, רַבִּי means 'My Great one' or 'My Master'; Hebrew for 'Teacher' is מוֹרֶה or מֵבִין.PhillipLebsack wrote: ↑February 1st, 2018, 5:54 amI'm kind of perplexed. Ῥαββί is just the transliterated form of the Hebrew רַבִּי, which means διδάσκαλος.

Re: Why is the Johannine corpus so easy to read?
On Titus, the figure I got was 144 new words to learn, in the 659 word letter. It seems much harder to me (beginner-intermediate) than Matthew or Luke. Even though there are far fewer words to learn, they're concentrated in a small text, so that instead of 6-7% of words being new, it's 22%. A 15-wo...

Re: Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθʼ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ
For the NT, καθʼ ἡμέραν without neuter article: Matt 26:55; Mark 14:49; Luke 9:23, 16:19, 22:53; Acts 2:46, 47, 3:2, 16:5, 19:9; 1 Cor 15:31; Heb 7:27, 10:11 With neuter article: Luke 11:3, 19:47; Acts 17:11 Needless to say, the places without outnumber those with more than 4:1, plus is peculiar to ...

Re: Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθʼ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ
BDF §160 literally calls it a 'meaningless article': 160. The accusative of respect with adjectives (for δεδεμένος τοὺς πόδας and the like, s. §159(3)) and the like is used in the NT in a very limited way, since its function has almost entirely passed over to the dative (§197). Mt 27:57 τοὔνομα ‘by ...

Re: Why is the Johannine corpus so easy to read?
Well, yes, the Johannine smallish word range is probably what makes it seem 'easy' as opposed to say, Titus for instance. But I think that's being grossly unfair to Titus. Yes there's 300 distinct lemmas in the letter, but is it difficult to read? All that's against Titus is vocab - the rest of the ...
