Re: What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12?

So you are not taking ζήσεται as "[gain/retain] the state of being alive" but rather as "conduct"? Not answering for Mike, but it certainly doesn't follow that reading with a cognitive-spatial "in" means you can't understand ζήσεται as "[gain/retain] the state of ...

Re: Catena in Marcum: ὥσπερ οὖν

Thanks for enlightening me. My suspicion that οὖν was doing something different from what it usually does in the New Testament is justified. My desire to go forth and buy Montanari's lexicon is further enflamed. After looking at LSJ again, it does mention this usage, but Montanari is so much clearer...

Catena in Marcum: ὥσπερ οὖν

Here is the text from page 316, lines 26 through page 317 line 2 with the part of most interest highlighted: “Καὶ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν πολλὰ, ἵνα μὴ ἀποστείλῃ αὐτοὺς ἔξω τῆς “χώρας,” ἢ εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον ἀπελθεῖν, ὥς φησιν ὁ Λουκᾶς. ἡ γὰρ ἄβυσσος ἀναχώρησίς ἐστι τούτου τοῦ κόσμου. ἀξιοῦσι τοίνυν οἱ δαίμονες...

Re: Koine majuscule letter stroke order, advice requested

could anyone point me to a reasonably trustworthy source regarding the proper stroke order for writing Koine using a kalamos (reed pen)? It strikes me that "the proper stroke order" for writing would be dependent on a variety of factors, with the surface being written on and the person wr...

Re: Romans 1:1. Own translation. Grammar check

To perhaps unpack with more detail some of the concerns that others have raised with your translation. 1. Your basic premise seems to be that since εἰς is translated as "into" more often than not in the KJV (which I would hazard the guess that this will also be true of any English translat...

Re: John 7:35 - the 'diaspora of the Greeks'

I'm wondering if anyone might have access to the Greek vorlage of the above-mentioned citation from Chrysostom's Homily 50 on gJohn? For any involved/interested in this discussion who don't have access to TLG, here is the page in Migne that it is on: https://books.google.com/books?id=czuFE42hAXoC&a...

Re: John 7:35 - the 'diaspora of the Greeks'

John Chrysostom clearly believes this is a ‘diaspora of the Greeks’ in the literal (partitive) sense. I'm confused how a native speaker of Greek had an understanding that is so far from the modern consensus of Greek scholars. His opinion doesn't seem to warrant any consideration, for some reason. D...

Re: Epistle to Diogenetus

I've noticed that some higher literary texts really like to interleave (for want of a better word) their constituents, as I marked up with the colors below. I don't quite know what to make of it. It's not common in the NT, however. Markovic has a nice article on hyperbaton (Markovic, Daniel. “Hyper...

Re: Greek Grammars on the Articulation of Prepositional Objects

How much the descriptive statements can be separated from "why"? More accurately, how reliable can a description be if it's not understood why it is so? This is related to my previous comment - can it be even observationally accurate if we actually don't know what we observe, and can we k...

Re: Diogenes 4.4 - supported reading and searching of Greek and Latin Texts

Where do I need to install them on my Mac? I already have the Diogenes update itself, but haven't installed it yet. Just install them wherever you want and will be able to find them again. When you set up Diogenes it will have you provide the location of the files. I don't know if this is also true...
