Re: Why is λόγος consistently translated as "word"?
Thank you Barry, for your research. I admit freely that I'm talking out of my depth when it comes to the Latin and could fairly easily be convinced that I'm simply missing the boat on the Latin part (sermo vs verbum) and to be honest I don't think that translating LOGOS as "speech" solves ...

Re: Why is λόγος consistently translated as "word"?
Also, I noticed today that for the verbal form of LOGOS (λέγω) BDAG gives as the #1 usage: ① to express oneself orally or in written form, utter in words, say, tell, give expression to, the gener. sense (not in Hom., for this εἶπον, ἐν[ν]έπω, et al.)... Arndt, W., Danker, F. W., Bauer, W., & Gin...

Re: Question on Mt. 7:22
I am convinced by the case made here that the appeal by the soon-to-be sent away is not a question. I don't see any reasonable doubt on that score. But for καὶ τότε ὁμολογήσω αὐτοῖς ὅτι οὐδέποτε ἔγνων ὑμᾶς I wounder if he isn't saying something like "Well I never recognized you!"? I mean, ...

Re: Why is λόγος consistently translated as "word"?
Following your suggestion I just did a search and lo and behold it appears that Jerome was copying a Pope:

Re: Why is λόγος consistently translated as "word"?
To my knowledge Jerome did not know English as well as I do and as a native speaker I can tell you that to my ears the way "word" is used in English Bibles is more Biblish than it is English. I've never heard any of these in secular English: "The word of the President is recorded in p...

Re: What software doesn't do ....
* I'm reading the KJV and the passage seems obscure (that part isn't the ideal) * the verse has 3 interesting words, like "sealed" or "stumble" so I want to see the OT background * I right click and it presents the option, "Show all occurrences in Greek" * I click and ...

Re: What software doesn't do ....
My study usually involves finding the OT background of NT passages in the LXX and also investigating the NT usage of OT passages in the LXX. But because Bibles use the Hebrew OT there is undue effort in making the connections. My dream software, which has always seemed to me to be a modest dream yet...

Re: Why is λόγος consistently translated as "word"?
From my point of view, the Latin should have been rendered with "sermo" rather than "verbum". That's exactly my point. In fact, I had that conversation here: https://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/questions/19771/what-does-the-latin-word-sermo-convey-that-verbum-does-not-in-john-...
