Re: Beginners: how are you learning? how is it going?

Hey, John, my advice at this point is to trash the interlinear. Start reading the Greek without it. Even if you only do one verse a day, it's far better for developing your ability to read the language than depending on instant English decoding. English you know -- it's Greek you have to develop.

Re: ANGELO of Rev 2:1

Why make this so complicated? You have the word γράφω. It is often used with the dative of indirect object, the one to whom you write. Human agency is normally represented with a preposition, such as διά. I simply can't imagine anyone reading this of any other construction here.

Re: John 8:25

ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ· Σὺ τίς εἶ; εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Τὴν ἀρχὴν ὅ τι καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖν; Please note that Τὴν ἀρχὴν is accusative, and can't be the answer to the question -- it would have to in the nominative case. ὅ τι reads as the neuter singular in the NAS and SBL critical texts, and makes best sense as ...

Re: ANGELO of Rev 2:1

Thanks for the tutorial guidance. :) I've just began to study a couple of basic greek grammers and the subject of basic sentence structure. I've also read the "things greek teachers will not tell you", posted at this site. One statement was that you need more than the greek, the greek can...

Re: ANGELO of Rev 2:1

Τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῆς ἐν Ἐφέσῳ ἐκκλησίας γράψον

If John is the angel, why is he being instructed to write to that angel? I think most likely, ἀγγελος refers to the pastor of each church, but I see nothing in the Greek which would specify it more than it is.

Re: Ephesians 2.8

For τοῦτο itself understood as referring to an entire clause, I think 1 Pet 2:19-20 provides two nice examples: 19 τοῦτο γὰρ χάρις εἰ διὰ συνείδησιν θεοῦ ὑποφέρει τις λύπας πάσχων ἀδίκως· 20 ποῖον γὰρ κλέος εἰ ἁμαρτάνοντες καὶ κολαφιζόμενοι ὑπομενεῖτε; ἀλλʼ εἰ ἀγαθοποιοῦντες καὶ πάσχοντες ὑπομενεῖτε...

Re: Ephesians 2.8

Just to muddy it further for you, Tom, I believe it refers to the entire previous clause, "saved by grace through faith." It's not unusual to use the neuter to refer to a previous clause.

Re: Noun Case Endings & Verb Endings

I have found that students who use what you are calling the "whole ending" method tend to do better. I simply require the students, when writing out paradigms, to write out an entire inflected word. With older students, I will occasionally explain why the ending looks like it does, but as ...

First, please remember that forum rules require the use of a real name. A moderator will help you set up your account to display this if you request it. Secondly, just to review, a pronoun gets its number and gender from its antecedent. It gets its case from how its used grammatically in the sentenc...

Re: I need help with Philippians 2:6-8

In all fairness, though, it is possible to say "here is what people who have studied this text in the original say." For that, however, I would assiduously avoid interlinears and Strong's. Exegetical commentaries are the best in this context, for the reader who doesn't have time to learn G...
