Re: I need help with Philippians 2:6-8
Hello Timothy, Two things: 1) Anyone else agree (or disagree) with that? 2) What other dictionary do you suggest to use for biblical Greek (and better if it has also Hebrew)? I agree with it, though "burn" is a bit strong. I would merely rip it to bits to save energy... The problem ...

Re: Constructio ad Sensum in the prologue of John
I think we need to be cautious here -- authors don't always do what we might expect from our sense of the rules of grammar in a language, especially if it's a living language to them. John, on the other hand, is very careful author. I think its quite likely that by vs. 10 he is thinking of the "...

Re: John 7:52 ἐγείρεται
Actually, I don't think the NRSV is intended to be particularly futuristic. I think it's trying to capture the force of ἐγείρεται, to the effect that Galilee is just not a place from which prophets come.

Mike, it's standard in Greek that a neuter plural subject may take a singular verb. Αληθή is a neuter plural.

Re: Kai
When Kai joins words or phrases together, it is simple enough and similar to English "and". When Kai joins clauses and sentences, it is more complicated. Kai can function like an English "then" as in Matt 4:19 (Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people). The English "...

Re: Need advice: taking Greek course on Romans
Glen, it disturbs me that you have to resort to an interlinear. It sounds like you might want to start with a review of the basics, both paradigms and basic syntax. The ability to identify the case ending of a noun or the form of a verb is essential. The goal is for it to become automatic, but it so...

Re: Speaking Greek means digging into inflections
I think this is a both/and. I strongly encourage memorizing the paradigms, and at the same time using them as much as possible. We have evidence from ancient times that school children memorized paradigms.

Greg, I'd be interested to hear what you are using as well, and specifically how you are reworking your curriculum.

Re: οτι
Susan, a practical way to approach this: how do you know when you are reading Greek composed by an ancient author, that ὅτι means "that" or "because?" I hate to say it, but it's context, right? Sometimes the context is really simple, as when someone might write: πιστεύομεν ὅτι πί...

Re: Jude 5 Ἰησοῦς λαὸν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου σώσας
I saw this thread, and said to myself, "Self, I don't ever remember it like this." Checking my default NA text, I found the expected κύριος. But when I looked at my handy-dandy SBL text, I found Ἰησοῦς. Here is the apparatus note from the SBL text: Ἰησοῦς Holmes WHmarg ] κύριος WH Treg; ὁ ...
