Re: John 10:10b understanding the clauses

Barry, isn't your Translation mixing the scratched and the replaced text I was supplying the translation for both but failed to includ a / or other punctuation to show the distinction. Sorry for not being clearer. It's a first cup of coffee not complete issue... :D I read this Papyrus: (corrected t...

Re: John 10:10b understanding the clauses

Mayser did research on the Greek Papyri in Egypt. The text he quotes is a Letter of a Maron to a Zenon. So he's looking at this: Διόδωρος δὲ παρέχει περισσὸν τοῦ ἀντιλέγειν καθ᾽ ἐχάστην ἡμέραν Mayser says περισσὸν functions as a noun here? The text of this may be found here, for those of us who hav...

Re: John 10:10b understanding the clauses

Barry, if ζωὴν were preceded by an article as you suggest, I think I would agree with you (and I can’t find the pronoun you referenced in either of the preceding sentences). I fail to see what the presence or absence of the article has to do with it. And my apologies for not being clear, what I mea...

Re: John 10:10b understanding the clauses

Honestly, I think that if the substantive were intended, we would have τὀ περισσόν. Much more likely to understand τἠν ζωήν or the pronoun αὐτήν from the previous clause and render περισσόν adverbially, "they may have it in abundance."

Re: Aorist verbs in the Magnificat

Your point is taken, but the problem is: The Luke-Gospel was written in Greek (we don't have proof, that there were Hebrew copies), so every translation (and interpretation) should take the text as given in Greek, not in Hebrew. The Greek-Luke-Gospel was meant to be read/heard by people, that proba...

Re: Greetings χαιρετε

American Classicists generally (not universally) make a distinction. In my experience, it is mainly Seminary-trained and Christian-college-trained Hellenists who pronounce an o-micron as an alpha instead of a shorter form of an o-mega. That's not a function of Erasmian itself, but a function of the...

Re: 2 Cor. 7:1 active vs middle/passive

Let me just add that the direct reflexive use of the middle was fairly rare even in classical Greek, and pretty much restricted to certain verbs. Direct-Reflexive Meaning 35.11 Primarily with verbs that denote a habitual physical treatment, like λούω bathe, κείρω cut hair, κοσμέω adorn, ἀλείφω anoin...

Re: Greetings χαιρετε

Welcome to B-Greek. Just out of curiosity, why don't you like Erasmean? Erasmus never attained sainthood, but I'm sure he's displeased.. Seriously though you might try restored pronunciation or modern, plenty of online resources, a couple of which have already been mentioned. I was trained in ...
