ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι Agent, Instrument, Sphere? I Corinthians 12:13
In 1 Corinthians 12:13 there is the question of whether ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι should be rendered ‘by’ or ‘with’ or ‘in’. Yet, in Matthew’s account of John baptising, we read Ἐγὼ μὲν ὑμᾶς βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι εἰς μετάνοιαν,... αὐτὸς ὑμᾶς βαπτίσει ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ πυρί· It seems to me like an open and shut ...

Re: Intransitivity and the Middle Voice in NT
Thank you very much. This has been very enlightening. It seems clear that the only way to successful understanding is voluminous reading of Greek texts!
Again, thank you!

Re: Intransitivity and the Middle Voice in NT
That makes sense. So Matt 27:5b καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπήγξατο is not intransitive, but absolute, or at least the object, himself, is implied - Judas hung (himself). If I was composing in Greek and I wished to write something intransitive, would I most naturally use the middle voice? Perhaps I'm looking for a...

Re: Intransitivity and the Middle Voice in NT
Thank you! Your help is much appreciated!
So if I have a verb that has no direct object, I would consider it intransitive. Is this intransitivity then marked by a middle ending?

Intransitivity in 1 Cor 13:8
Is pausontai in 1 Cor 13:8 intransitive and if so, does this undermine the argument that tongues stopped by themselves before the arrival of "the perfect" because middle voice must mean "stop by, for themselves"?

Re: repetition or omission of the preposition
Thank you,Wes. I think you are right with your analogy. David Sansone, approaching the problem from the angle of classical Greek, emphasizes that in a hendiadys, either term can be subordinated to the other. But, both concepts must be grasped at one time. Thus, to apply his principle to John 3:5, if...
